How long can you use a forklift safely? What's their average lifespan?
Depending on application, type of forklift and maintenance practices, the average lifespan of a forklift is 15 years or 10,000 - 12,000 hours. Once this level is reached, the possibility for engine and/or transmission failures greatly increase. Every hour put on a forklift is equivalent to approximately 30 miles on a car. Electric forklifts do not have an engine or transmission, so a longer lifespan may be experienced.
What is a "PM"?
FMH Material Handling Solutions, offers a variety of Planned Maintenance (PM) programs to include a standard PM, 1,000 hour PM and 2,000 hour PM. Our programs are based on agreements rather than contracts, therefore should your forklift be rotated out or retired, the agreement can be cancelled or revised. Book your appoint here.
How often do I need to service my forklift?
For a normal and clean environment, FMH Material Handling Solutions, recommends a standard PM to be completed between 200 - 250 hours or at a minimum every 6 months. As a convenience to our customers, we will assign a PM Technician to your account. This allows the mechanic to maintain a history of your equipment as well as understand your specific requirements. Lastly, with every standard PM the technician will provide you with a detailed write up of recommended repairs and/or replacements (i.e. worn tires, worn hoses, loose chains, etc.). At which time, you can either authorize the repair or request an estimate. Book your appoint here.
How often should I replace my forklift's tires?
Generally, solid rubber cushion type tires need to be replaced once they are worn to the top of the lettering on the side wall. Pneumatic tires should be replaced about 1/4" tread remains. In addition, the tire(s) should be replaced if there are noticeable chunks, cracks or slits. Forklifts do not have a suspension system, so the force of impact is received through the rubber in the tires. Do my forklift operators need to be trained?
Yes, as per O.S.H.A, your forklift operators must be trained in the "safe operation of powered industrial trucks" (forklifts) every 3 years to get re-certified - see safety training flyer. FMH Material Handling Solutions, has a dedicated Safety Trainer and offer Operator Training, Train-the-Trainer and Refresher Training Classes; all of which can be done at your location or ours. Do you have a rental fleet?
Yes, we have a very large rental fleet ranging from 3,000 lbs. to 55,000 lbs. base capacity indoor or outdoor forklifts. In addition, we offer everything from electric sit-down riders to stand up reach trucks. Forklifts can be rented by the day, week, 4-weeks or longer terms. Do you sell pallet jacks?
Yes, we offer both manual and electric pallet jacks. We stock manual jacks that are 5,500 lbs. capacity with 48" long x 27" or 20.5" OAW forks and our electric jacks range from 3,000 lbs. to 4,500 lbs. with 48" long forks. Do you lease or finance forklifts?
Yes. We offer Fair Market Value, Stated Purchase Option, $1.00 Option, Long Term Rental Leases and Equipment Finance Agreements (ownership). Leases are based on annual operating hours and application, therefore it will be tailored specifically to your operation. In addition, as a side contract, we can offer a Total Maintenance and Repair package that will include PMs, maintenance and breakdowns for the duration of the lease term. Do you sell used equipment?
Yes, our typical forklift inventory is comprised of late model with low hours. Our reconditioning process consists of oil/filter (engine/transmission/hydraulic) change, tune-up, sending out the radiator, new tires / new seat (if needed), a complete safety check and any other repairs as deemed necessary. How do I determine what capacity of forklift that I will need?
The majority of forklift capacities are based on a 24" load center. For example, a 5,000 lbs. base capacity forklift will lift a 48" x 48" x 48" box that weighs 5,000 lbs. However, the capacity of a forklift will decrease depending on extended load center, lifting height and if it is equipped with attachments (side shift, fork positioner, etc.). Does my forklift need a data plate?
Yes, as per O.S.H.A., all forklifts must be equipped with a manufacturer's data tag that includes the model, serial number and rated capacities based on lift height and attachments. Learn more about O.S.H.A requirements here.
Do my forks need to be replaced?
Yes, as per ANSI, the forks need to be replaced when the fork blade is reduced to 90% of its original thickness. For every 10% of wear equates to 20% reduction in fork capacity. Please contact us and we will arrange a site visit to inspect your forks.
