Keep Your Forklifts Running Strong with Service Visits

Jan. 13 2022 News By FMH Team

Can't source a new or used forklift, even though you need it right now? We understand it's frustrating, and are working hard on the supply issues.

For now though, here's a solution—service the ones you have to keep them running strong.

The #1 Value in Forklift Maintenance – Extending the Forklift's Lifespan

With the supply chain as tight as it is, new forklift orders continue to see long wait times. We're working hard to bring in new trucks as fast as we can.

In the meantime, you'll need to help your current forklift fleet meet the demand. Regular service and repair will keep your forklifts working just as hard as you.

How often should you maintain forklifts?

Today's forklifts can run a long time with no trouble. However, you don't want to run them so long that they break down.

Ideally, you'll want to service your forklifts when each truck passes 200 operation hours. You've probably heard this figure, or something close to it.

Let's say you had one forklift on a 6-hour shift, 5 days a week. That's 30 hours. If you kept the forklift running 30 hours a week, every week, it will pass the 200-hour mark in seven weeks – almost two months.

At this point the forklift should at least receive a minor maintenance check and tune-up.

What kind of maintenance does a forklift need each year?

From the above interval, we can determine that a forklift needs 3-5 minor maintenance checks per year. These involve mechanical inspections, lubrication, steam cleaning, and operational tests.

Also, it will need at least one major service. This is a more thorough maintenance, which replaces worn-out parts, conducts a full electrical diagnostic, tunes up the ignition system, and runs other safety tests.

Planned Maintenance vs. On-Call Service: Which Should You Use?

Everyone's called a technician to schedule service visits as-needed before. Nothing's wrong with this method…but a better one exists.

Planned Maintenance (PM) puts maintenance on the calendar. You book the service appointments in advance, guaranteeing your forklifts receive regular service throughout the year.

This also lowers maintenance costs per forklift. How? By extending the forklift's total usable life. You can expect a typical LPG forklift to last 10,000 to 12,000 hours of operation. A well-maintained forklift however, can go up to 15,000 hours—years of extra use, for a few hours of maintenance time!
